Mick O’Gorman Reviews the Writing in Business Session

‘Writing for Business and the Business of Writing’, with Paul Reaney and Mike Cook (4 August 2011)

The first social at our new venue welcomed two professional writers who outlined the twists and turns of their professional careers. Paul’s path went from feature writing for Shoot magazine to PR consultancy to copywriting for Uhlsport. He extolled the virtues of brevity, accuracy and professionalism and urged any potential professionals to immerse themselves in the business mindset and keep an eye out for opportunities. Paul started his own business and added a solid knowledge of web design and search engine organisation to his writing.

Mike fell into writing through drawing and writing comics and fanzines. Mike’s stories were popular at a time when comics were on the rise. He wrote for 2000AD, Tank Girl, Aliens Comics and Marvel UK. He wrote stories for Sonic the Hedgehog before a dip in the market forced him to be flexible. He won a playwriting competition and engaged an agent before contributing to The Bill, children’s television and Boots. Successful business writing requires expertise in getting the right message across and finding the correct language to make it work—even if it’s the business of drainage.

They gave an informative and entertaining talk with a brisk discussion to follow. The Studio would like to thank Paul and Mike for their time and advice.
