World Building for Science Fiction and Fantasy *ONLINE WORKSHOP*

About this Event
Fantasy and science-fiction are both genres renowned for worldbuilding, with authors creating evocative, exciting settings for their stories from scratch. But what goes into making a great world for your fiction, and where do you begin with such a seemingly huge task? This workshop will be offering up a range of practical advice, exercises and examples to ensure you can develop well-considered and thrilling settings for your tales!
Writer and creative writing tutor, Alex Davis will guide you through a series of exercises designed to help you:
- Establish what the definition of worldbuidling is
- Explore some of the fundamental aspects of worldbuilding
- Look at what makes for a truly compelling fantasy/SF world
- Investigate what aspects writers needs to consider in worldbuilding
- Study exemplar pieces of worldbuilding from other fantasy and SF pieces
Alex Davis is an author of horror and science-fiction, as well as a tutor and lecturer with fifteen years of experience. He has had a range of horror short stories and poetry published. He’s also the creator and organisers of Derby’s popular Edge-Lit genre fiction event, which enters its 9th year in 2020.

How to access the workshop
This workshop will be delivered online via Zoom. Zoom is a cloud-based video conferencing service you can use to virtually meet with others – either by video or audio-only or both. A user manual containing access instructions and a link will be sent out to you before the workshop. You will need an internet connection, and a computer with either a built in camera or webcam, and a built-in microphone/speaker.
