About Nottingham Does Comics
NDC is a bi-monthly forum by and for anybody interested in reading, creating, publishing, selling or studying new work and new horizons in the medium of comics. It is a platform where those curious about comics can explore and exchange ideas with established and aspiring practitioners, where the mainstream meets the indies, and where embryonic projects will be supported to find their wings.
Our evenings feature two or three guest presentations designed to inspire, with plenty of time for Q&As, chat and being sociable. The event is free to attend but a £3 donation towards room hire is appreciated.
About this month’s speakers
Paul McCaffrey is our man in Burton on Trent. For many years he worked as an illustrator of educational materials for the likes of Macmillan, Empire, NME and Punch before making his mark with the press strip Omnivistascope. He’s illustrated comics for IDW, Marvel, DC, and Aces Weekly, and covers for Titan. After a stint penciling Kim Newman’s Anno Dracula 1895, he’s currently drawing the mini-series Adler – Woman of Mystery by Lavie Tidhar. Paul will be bigging up all the mistakes he made that got him to where he is today. And we don’t mean Burton!
The silent medium of comics is unique in the way it deploys sound effects. Struggling with sfx for his latest opus, Brick set aside his nib to research the subject and cogitate (Hmmm). What he discovered might surprise you (EEEK!). What he’s deduced might douse your fire (SPLOOSH! Tsssss). But what he believes remains the challenge will certainly get the ol’ cogs turning (Whirrr). All will be revealed (POOF!) , with audible Booms and Pows and Kersplats. Or is silence golden (…)?
