Monsters & How to Make Them! A Children’s Writing Workshop (in Studio)

Author of the Zeke Hailey children’s sci-fi series, Ian C. Douglas, shows young writers how to design and write their own fictional monster!

About this event

Basilisks, vampires, titans, dragons, goblins, Frankenstein, everyone loves a good monster. They make enjoyable books all the better, by adding suspense, chills or even comedy to the story. But how do writers go about inventing new and original monsters? This course begins with a step-by-step guide to making your own creation. You will get to design a unique monster. Then you will have the chance to practice writing a story that features it, with support from author Ian C Douglas. There’s also a monster quiz and fun writing games.

Throughout this course you will…

  • Become more aware of fantasy and SF children’s novels.
  • To encourage reading and in doing so build reading skills.
  • Become aware of basic creative writing strategies, such as plot, narrative structure, the hero’s journey, dialogue, etc.
  • Stimulate the literary imagination and love of creative writing.
  • Enjoy sharing written work and giving positive peer-to-peer feedback.
  • Become more confident in creative writing.

About Ian C. Douglas…

Ian C Douglas is author of the award-winning middle-grade Zeke Hailey novels. As a prolific short-story writer, recent credits include the Gravity Award 2021 and ‘The Curse of the Were-Spider.’ In 2011, his Children’s History of Nottinghamshire became a local bestseller. This led to Ian touring local schools and book festivals with his Nottingham History Roadshow. In 2014 his graphic fiction was nominated for two Eisner awards. In 2019 Ian was guest-of-honour at the Malta Festival of Literary Stars. Ian served as literacy ambassador and exhibited writing alongside Michael Rosen. Ian’s workshops are informed by his MA in Creative Writing (Distinction) and his background in Education.
