In Conversation with NWS Members: How to use fairy tales in your writing

16 September @ 18:45 - 19:45

About this event

Rich as they are in archetypes and striking imagery, fairy tales provide writers with an inexhaustible seam of literary material to mine.” Indeed, much of Teika’s writing is inspired by fairy tales, whether the setting is contemporary, fantastical, futuristic or historical. In this event, Teika (whose name means fairy tale in Latvian) will talk about the inspiration behind some of her poetry and short fiction, and provide insights into how to successfully reinvent and repurpose some of our best-loved tales.

Teika Marija Smits is an ex-scientist, freelance editor and mother-of-two. She writes poetry, fiction and non-fiction, and has been published in Mslexia, Reckoning, Shoreline of Infinity, Best of British Science Fiction 2018 and Enchanted Conversation. The former director of Mother’s Milk Books, she edited the popular series of dark fairy tale anthologies, The Forgotten and the Fantastical, and she is now an Editor-at-Large at Valley Press. Her debut poetry pamphlet, Russian Doll, was published by Indigo Dreams Publishing in March 2021.
