In Conversation with NWS Members: Fictionalising mental health

13 May @ 18:30 - 19:30

About this Event

NWS introduces a new series of workshops, “In Conversation with NWS Members” where we invite members of our talented cohort of writers to talk about their writing style, process, and works-in-progress!

In May, we’ll be joined by NWS Member and author Anne Goodwin for a talk focussed on fictionalising mental health and psychosis.

Mental well-being is a work in progress for most of us, particularly after the events of 2020, but does it make a good subject for fiction? How do we write authentically and compassionately about mental health, and why would we want to?

As a former clinical psychologist and long-term psychotherapy client, it’s perhaps unsurprising to find mental health themes in Anne Goodwin’s fiction. But even without this background, you can still write convincingly about mental disorder. Anne will share some tips, with particular reference to her forthcoming novel, Matilda Windsor Is Coming Home, set in a long-stay psychiatric hospital in the process of closing.

Book your place

Tickets are FREE for NWS Members and £3 for general admission.

This session will be delivered online via Zoom. Zoom is a cloud-based video conferencing service you can use to virtually meet with others – either by video or audio-only or both. A user manual containing access instructions and a link will be sent out to you shortly before the workshop. You will need an internet connection and a computer with either a built-in camera or webcam and a built-in microphone/speaker.
