Festive linoprint workshop: Make cards and gift tags
26 November, 2017 @ 10:00 am - 1:30 pm
Tory and Sophie will be teaching the basics of linocut block printing, giving participants the opportunity to explore the medium for themselves. Linocut is similar to woodcut printing – a design is carved away with sharp tools, then the print block is inked then printed onto paper or card, and used to create multiple imprints.
In this session, participants will have the chance to get to grips with a set of lino tools to produce experimental cuts, then design an image which they will carve into a piece of vinyl lino and test print. They will then print their own greetings cards and gift tags using a traditional Japanese hand-printing tool called a baren.
In this workshop, we will be using oil-based inks to achieve beautiful colour prints. We will demonstrate how to use a roller to print a single colour, as well as achieve a gradient effect.
We will use vinyl lino which is soft and easy to cut (unlike carving experiences people may have had at school!).
Participants will be able to produce:
Five greetings cards
Ten paper luggage-style gift tags
All materials will be provided. Please feel free to bring any ideas/images with you, and we can discuss designs on the day. Do also feel free to bring an apron if you are concerned about ink!
N.B. We will be using sharp tools in this workshop, so it is not suitable for children.
