A Hitchhiker’s Guide to the World of Independent Publishing – 10am til 1pm
Today’s author is spoilt for choice when it comes to deciding on how to get their book published. But whether they choose to go down the traditional or independent publishing route, one thing is essential for the book to find its readers: it needs to be expertly crafted and professionally packaged. This workshop will take authors considering independent and self-publishing on a guided tour through the four key areas of book production: content development, design and printing, bookselling, and marketing.
Dr Teika Bellamy is the founder and managing editor of Mother’s Milk Books. In 2015, Teika was the recipient of the Women in Publishing’s New Venture Award for pioneering work on behalf of under-represented groups in society; Mother’s Milk Books was also longlisted in the 2016 Saboteur Awards category ‘Most Innovative Publisher’. Teika is a popular speaker who is passionate about the role of independent presses and women authors within the publishing world.
Book Cover Design on a Budget – 2pm til 5pm
Contrary to the saying, readers do judge a book by its cover, and in the age of tiny digital thumbnails as the reader’s first impression, having an eye-catching cover is even more important. For indie publishing authors, book covers can be one of the biggest expense. This workshop will take you step by step through the process of creating a compelling cover, giving you more control over and insight into this important element of your novel.
With five years of experience as a small press publisher, Teika Bellamy looks at what makes a successful book cover and gives tips on design, composition, and use of images and fonts. Using open source desktop publishing software, Scribus and image manipulation program, GIMP, she will take you through the necessary steps to get you from blank page to professional-looking genre-appropriate cover.
